Red Dead Redemption 2 To Contain Microtransactions
Strauss Zelnick confirms.
Back in the day there was a time where microtransactions only showed their faces in free to play games, as that's how the developers regained their development costs. However, microtransactions began to creep into paid releases over the years such as Grand Theft Auto 5 and Overwatch. They've certainly modified the industry and now we know that all games released by Take Two Interactive in the future will include them in some shape or form; this includes Red Dead Redemption 2.
Strauss Zelnick, Take Two CEO, confirmed this in a recent investor call. Zelnick claimed that microtransactions accounted for a mindblowing 42% of Take Two's 'net bookings' in the past quarter, so it's not surprising to learn that future games like RDR2 will include them.
"We aim to have recurrent consumer spending opportunities for every title that we put out at this company. It may not always be an online model, it probably won't always be a virtual currency model, but there will be some ability to engage in an ongoing basis with our titles after release across the board".
Judging by GTA Online's success, it's kind of been a given that RDR2 Online multiplayer will have microtransactions. This wasn't said in Zelnick's statement, but it could mean that microtransactions could creep their way into the game's single player as well.
Naturally we won't have concrete details on Red Dead Redemption 2's microtransactions until we get closer to the release date, however we do know that they'll be in the game, and if Zelnick's statement is anything to go by, all future Take Two releases will do too.
