Nintendo Switch Overtakes Wii U's Lifetime Sales In Just 10 Months
I was always a strong believer in the Nintendo Switch and intended to get one on launch day, which is exactly what I did, and I have zero regrets. It's a brilliant console, and that's coming from an exclusive PC gamer ;)
The Wii U will always be a part of Nintendo's history, despite how poorly it sold (though there were some cracking games on there, some of which are being ported to the Switch, I can't wait to play them). Today's latest financials mark a major turning point, and now it's regarded as only a brief blip of failure for Nintendo, as the Switch has now outsold the Wii U in just 10 months at 14.86 million units. Comparably, the Wii U was on sale for 5 years to reach its total of 13.56 million sales.
In the previous quarter, Nintendo sold 7.23 million units, which in itself is an impressive feat. As a whole they produced an operating profit of an eye-watering 116.50 billion yen / £755 million, making it their most profitable quarter since the Wii success in 2009.
Whilst we're on the topic of Nintendo and sales, Super Mario Odyssey is the best selling Switch game with 9.07 million copies shipped; this also puts it on track to become the best selling 3D Mario - it's currently 3.68 million behind Super Mario Galaxy.
In 3DS news, Mario Kart 7 has sold 16.76 copies in its lifetime. The best selling Pokemon titles are X & Y, with Sun & Moon not too far behind; it's sold 16.05 million copies since its 18th November 2016 release. Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon have sold 7.17 million units in its 2 months of being on sale.
