Call of Duty: WW2 was almost Advanced Warfare 2
Sledgehammer had plans for an Advanced Warfare sequel.
Fans of the Call of Duty series may have missed out on the game returning to its World War roots this year, as it is revealed that the game's developer had other plans for the direction of the series.
According to Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg, Sledgehammer Games (original developers of Advanced Warfare) had actually made plans to begin development on Advanced Warfare 2, before Activision stepped in to steer the ship in a different direction.
"Sledgehammer wanted to make Advanced Warfare 2," Hirshberg told Newsweek. He said that Activision thought the studio would be better suited to bring their WW2 return to reality. "We knew they would become historians, that they would tackle it with authenticity, give it tremendous care and we also knew they would capture the unspeakable scale of World War 2,”
"What I love about this game is that anyone’s who’s looking forward to going back to the roots, the gritty, human-scale, boots-on-the-ground, militaristic, authentic experience that Call Of Duty is known for, this game delivers it in a big way."
It looks like Activision made the right move, following three back-to-back futuristic Call of Duty games, the WW2 release has seen launch sales double that of Infinite Warfare.
