I can’t recommend for screens above 18" Unfortunately the VGA end of this cable has an extremely thin cable, which obviously isn’t shielded properly. Since it will be carrying high-bandwidth images from the xbox as a high-def connection, this is not good. Most decent standalone VGA cables are very thick if you wish to use them for this sort of high bandwidth imaging.
I personally used to use this cable. On an 18" CRT monitor it worked satisfactorily. I experienced no problems with the optical out either, as my 5.1 setup was great, and surround really did work!!
When I upgraded to a larger Samsung 22" LCD monitor (which works beautifully!) I could EASILY notice ghosting and multiple images shown on the screen. This was very disconcerting and I actually couldn’t bear to watch the screen without my eyes beginning to ache. Multiple pictures in one can do that to you’re brain!
I spent ages tracking down the problem. It ended up being this cable. My screen worked perfectly from my laptop’s VGA out, but still ghosted and had a poor picture when plugged in with this cable (bear in mind my laptop WAS connected with one of the well shielded, thick, high bandwidth cables.)
I went into a PC world, who had my 22" monitor on display and also an Xbox 360 running on a large plasma screen. The picture on the plasma screen was excellent running through composite connections. One of their techs was extremely helpful and interested to find out what was going on (this trip alone restored my faith that PC world was okay, after they destroyed my hard drive!!!)
After some convincing and a talk with his boss he opened one of their Madcatz VGA cables, the one I am reviewing, and plugged it into the xbox. He also grabbed the monitor I was using and brought it over. When plugged in we saw exactly the same problem I had. Out of interest he also plugged it into the plasma TV through its VGA input and the ghosting was definitely still there. Good new is that my screen wasn’t faulty!
For this reason I cannot recommend this cable over the official or monster cable versions available for the Xbox 360. Poor build quality resulting in really obvious ghosting will haunt you!
I did not try the stereo phono connection for sound, but I trust that they are okay.
