Michael Poole (John Hurt) is a middle-aged ex-convict who moves into lodgings run by Alice (Brenda Blethyn) and her mother in Dublin. A relationship of sorts is tentatively undertaken by Michael and Alice, both wary of former disappointments and the hand life has dealt them. To complicate matters however mob boss Billy (Lorcan Cranitch) has some unfinished business to 'settle' with Michael, plunging the fledgling romance into danger.
