An overview of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, the US Navy's frontline interceptor from 1974 to 2006. Most widely known for its starring role in the hit film 'Top Gun', the F-14 was developed in 1968 after the collapse of the F-111B project. After five years of development, it was finally deployed as a carrier-based fighter, enabling both defensive and offensive strike capabilities against any enemy air threat. Six long-range AIM-54A Phoenix missiles could be targetted separately against six hostile targets, while medium-range sidewinder missiles and a 20mm cannon completed its arsenal, providing the Tomcat with a fearsome reputation.
